Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman Abraham Roman, was the 3rd child of the family. Her father, a carnival barker, was killed at the age of a tiny child, forcing her mother to help support the family by being an attendant and a cleaner. Ruth was raised in the poor tenement district in Boston, Massachusetts, where she attended school. She only attended the school for two years, before going on to pursue an acting career. The path she chose was filled with challenges. After landing a gig at New York as a model for a magazine that dealt with detectives, she had a difficult time trying to find opportunities on stage. Then, she worked as a hat check girl at an evening club, before deciding to call her quits and relocating to Boston. In Boston, she earned a living working as an usherette during the day, and at night was a part of the New England Repertory Company. It was her first role as an actor. She received a master's degree in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
